[page][?][/page] begin keeping the second beats of the clock and as soon as possible get the time. It is unneccessary to use the chronograph in this work as time is not recorded finer than the nearest second. This can be accurately enough done in the manner stated. Next read the sextant arc. Both of these readings (time and angle) should be made as quickly as possible but not too quickly for accuracy. Speed is desirable, accuracy absolutely necessary. Record both readings on the proper blank (a form of which is shown in Part II of this thesis. This operation is repeated until the requisite number of observations have been obtained. Circum-meridian observations should be preceeded by observations for index [pencil mark]x[/pencil mark]
