[page]62[/page] Index Error. The two principal errors to which sextant observations are liable are the index error and that due to eccentricity. It is my purpose in the last half of this thesis to present a full discussion of the latter. But before proceeding however we must consider the index error as it is directly involved in determining the eccentricity. Index error is due to non-parallelism of the mirrors or, in other words we have an index error when the zero of the mirrors does not correspond with the zero of the graduated arc. Two methods are generally employed in the determination of this error (1) Star method
