The reading will be the index correction. The correction will be + when the reading is off arc (i.e. to the right of the 0) and - when it is on arc. In other words, when the 0 of the Vernier is to the right of the 0 of the arc when the direct and reflected images are coincident the correction is + because all angles measured will be too small by the amount of the reading. When the Vernier 0 is to the left of the arc 0 the correction is - because all of the angles measured will be too large by that reading. The mean of a great number of observations is always taken so as to insure greater accuracy. The correction as thus ascertained is applied to all angles measured with the sextant.
