While it is not absolutely necessary to have the index error small it is of course desirable. It should always be constant. In some instruments provision is made to keep the index error small by means of adjustment. Other makers deem such provision unnecessary, claiming that all the observer has to do is to determine the error correctly and apply it. If a considerable amount of work is to be done with the sextant, extending over several hours, say, it is customary to take observations for index correction both at the beginning and conclusion of it and at an intermediate time.
