After having completed our observations for index correction by one of the two methods described we are ready to go ahead with the work of determining the eccentricity of the sextant. Now a few words on astronomical observations in general and sextant observation in particular. First:- Select a night favorable for observing. Be particular to avoid windy nights, for the least shaking of the mercury is sufficient to render work impossible or at least to vitiate the results. The different currents of air on such nights tend to produce wavering and indistinct images.
