this effect is not eliminated but has to be investigated. While the construction of the sextant is often mechanically perfect and the center of the index arm and graduated arc are made to coincide very nearly the variation of even a thousandth of an inch is sufficient to vitiate the results to an appreciable extent. There is a great difference between mechanical and mathematical accuracy. 2. There are several methods employed in determining eccentricity. (a) By measuring angles between terrestrial objects in the same plane with a good theodolite and then with the sextant comparing results. (b) By measuring the distance between known stars. The right ascension and declination.
