[page][65?][/page] of a great number of sextant stars is given in the navigator's edition of the Nautical Almanac. The positions as they appear to us will differ from those given in the Almanac by the amount of refraction. The necessary corrections and the apparent distances can be computed according to methods given in any practical astronomy. (c) By measuring the attitudes of known stars. The true altitudes of the stars may be computed or if they are near the meridian the circum-meridian formulae may be used. These altitudes must be corrected for refraction to make them comparable with those measured with the sextant. Whatever plan is adopted the angles chosen should be such that the measurements will be distinguished with some approach to uniformity
