Suffice it to say that they are simply observations made with the transit instrument of the meridian passage of certain stars, at least three in number, located, one below the pole, one above and one naer the zenith. The mean time of the transit of each is figured out and by means of the proper formulae the clock correction is obtained. As this is the first work in astronomy that the student is usually set at, it is perhaps unneccessary to go into details as the operation is probably perfectly familiar to the reader. The method of taking observations for determining index correction was thoroughly explained in the chapter
