entitled "Index error". The method of taking circum-meridian altitude observations was explained in the chapter headed "The artificial horizon." [b?]. Reduction of observations to the meridian. It is obvious that if a single observation of the altitude of a star could be made exactly on the meridian the value found could be employed in any formula in which the meridian-altitude is used without further correction. We could for instance obtain our exact latitude with very little computation and with exceeding accuracy. This however, from various causes, chief among which is a lack of accurate knowledge of the clock correction, is an impossibility. Even though this were known it is manifestly
