[page][illegible][/page] to it the mean of all the (Am)s and subtract from the result the mean of the (Bn)s. In this set (51) the mean of the observed altitudes is 37° 43' 50", the mean of the (Am)s 71.041" and the mean of the (Bn)s 0.014". Hence we get the check 37° 43' 50" + 71.041" - 0.014" = 37° 44' 41.527" which comes within 0.003" of the value obtained in the other way. This is a check on the work which should never be neglected. The last column, headed (V) is the column of residuals. These are found by subtracting each of the values of h[subscript]0[/subscript] in the column from the mean value. In the case of the first we have 48.58" - 41.53" = 7.05". The sum of the - residuals should equal the sum of the + residuals. Near the head of the blank space on the right of this column we place a small brace
