using the values of A, B and C as given on the blank described. The first is x + 0.20926 y + 0.612152 = 41degrees 40' 10.96" or in circular measure x + 0.20926 y + [.?]61215 z = 0.7272737 We next form by the method of least squares three equations, called normal equations from the nine given equations. Although this work is supposed to involve a knowledge of least squares I shall endeavor to explain it in such a manner that the student not having had this method will have no difficulty with the formation and reduction of the normal equations. The object of this work is to obtain from any number of equations involving the three unknown quantities x, y & z three equations which when solved will give the best obtainable values of these unknowns.
