sums of the columns of squares, then go through the work of finding the qualities [ab], [ac] etc., if no mistake is found here it will be necessary to check the accuracy of each of the squares. Very often the [bs]s and the [cs]s may check while the [as]s may not. This narrows the mistakes down to those columns involving (a). It will be noticed that a great deal of check work may often be saved by first approximately locating the error. These checks should [underline]always[/underline] be made as there is no other way of testing the accuracy of the work. Work without them is very properly regarded as worthless. If now everything is all right and the work checks we can proceed with the formation of the [[?usual?]] equations which is a very simple process.
