9 matured the stalk, blades and husks make a fair substitute for hay; the ripened grain is put to various uses as above mentioned; while the cobs, when not ground with the grain for stock-feed, make an excellent fuel for a quick fire. In some districts the whole ear is used for fuel - 100 bu. of ears being equivalent to about one cord of hard wood.
