15 that the staminate flowers matures two or three days before the pistillate and the pollen is about all shed before the pistillate flower is ready for fertilization. Mr. Galton made many careful experiments in reference to cross and self fertilization of corn. The ratio between the heights of the crossed and of the self fertilized is as [underlined] 100 [/underlined] to [underlined] 84 [/underlined]. In one series of experiments he finds the overage of [underlined] fifteen [/underlined] crossed plants to be 20.10. and of fifteen self-fertilized plants to be 17.57, or as 100 to 87.
