17 The crossed plants flower before the self-fertilized. Any one who has tried to raise field corn and sweet corn or popcorn or any other kinds of corn side by side can testify to the fact that cross fertilization does take place. In such cases an ear of what you might suppose to be [underlined] sweet-corn [/underlined] is more or less field-corn, caused by the pollen from the field-corn fertilizing the pistillate flower of the sweet corn. The reverse may also be true. Plant a row of yellow field-corn by the side of a row of white corn and the ears from these stalks
