19 The Roots The term root in this connection applies to such outgrowths of the substances of the plant as are clothed at this apex with a layer of tissue- the root-cap - shown in Plate VI. fig. 2 before the line a-a-a-. The origin of the root cap in [phanerogams?] may be considered according to the recent investigations of Haustein and Reinke, simply as a luxuriant growth of the priordial [epidemius?] (the dermotogen) localized at the apex, in such a manner that the part of the dermatogen which covers the apex of the root divides periodically by tangential wells.
