29 little or no covering. We often find corn sprouting in the bottom of a crib, some grains are covered more or less to be sure, but others are totally void of any covering. Corm germinates, as has been stated, under favorable conditions in three or four days after planting. The age of the seed and its percentage of moisture, the nature of the soil in which it is planted, and the presence or absence of certain chemicals compounds aside from the aforesaid conditions, effect the sprouting of corn. Many metallic salts arrest or retard the germination. Very weak
