37 The time for planting corn varies with the latitude and altitude also with the season. An old and familiar saying is "It is time to plant corn when the leaves on the oak tree are as large as squirrels' ears." This, however, is true; when the season is sufficiently advanced, the sooner the corn is in the ground the better the chances for a good crop. As a rule for Iowa from the 5th to the 15th of May is about the best time for planting corn. Some seasons, however, are such as to demand earlier planting for the best results. In 1883 the
