The Cornfield's Enemies Like most things else in the vegetable and animal worlds corn has its enemies. The first enemy of corn after it is planted, on our western prairies, that we shall notice is the striped prairie squirrel (Spermophilus tridecem-lineatus) often called the prairie gopher, and also the prairie gray squirrel (Spermophilus franklinii) The former is the more harmful. These pert little animals have the sense of smell very acute, and seem to have learned by experience
