In some parts of the country crows and blackbirds are very bad on the cornfield when the corn is just coming up, as they pull up the plantlet with kernel attached. A very effective remedy for these robbers is corn that has been soaked in a solution of strychnine or arsenic and scattered around over the ground. A somewhat transient enemy, though very formidable when present, is the grasshopper. When the corn is young and tender this insect will eat it to the ground. It, however, generally comes on again as it was not eaten enough
