8 A longitudinal section through the grain the narrow way. 2 -- the epidermal layer - that part of the kernel which corresponds to the bran in wheat. This section was made from a swollen grain & the end which was next the cob had swollen nearly circular. The diagram represents the grain or parts inverted. b.
