-2- NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR COUNCIL10 Council 10 members have been very busy remodeling its new building. They have already fixed up the bar room and will be ready to host a social hour at convention time. The new club rooms is located at the extreme west end of Davenport where Rockingham Rd. ends and runs into a Y. The left fork runs into highway 61 and the right fork is Ricker Hill Rd. The club house is a mere quarter block up Ricker Hill and sits up on a rise on the right hand side of the road. A former school building it has ample space to house the various LULAC projects that Council 10 is contemplating for the future. Among their plans is a Mexican cultural and historical library which will include works by and about Mexican Americans. NEW MEMBERS WANTED!!!!! If you want to do something in the way of helping the Mexican American better himself economically and educationally: If you want to enrich yourself with or strengthen your Mexican American cultural ties: If you want to help sponsor and attend social functions that not only provide the fellowship characteristic of the Mexican people but also raise funds to finance the various welfare and civic programs of LULAC: If you would like to participate in civic and community affairs and represent the Mexican community and project a positive image of our people: If none of these things interest you and you have an interest that will help our people in any way: THEN, LULAC provides you with the opportunity of promoting and realizing your constructive ideas of participation in any of the activities lested above. Our dues at Council 10 are $10.00 ayear or $15.00 for a married couple. Dues of other councils in Iowa are reasonable also. For your dues you receive a membership card, a membership pin, an free subscription to LULAC NEWS, our national paper. In the of Council 10 you have access to and enjoyment of our clubroom facilities. If you are interested in becoming a member fill in the enclosed membership blank and return to Box 242 with your remittance of $10.000. If you live within the community of a LULAC council other that #10 of Davenport contact a member of your local LULAC Council.. You become a full fledged member after three readings of your membership application. During this time you are welcome to attend meetings participate in the discussions and get acquainted with your fellow members and friends. JOHN TERRONEZ, CRS FIELD REPRESENTATIVE Brother John Terronez isn't seen (or heard) much around Davenport these days. His new job with the U.S. Justice Department as a field representative of the Community Relations Service keeps him busy. Although based in Chicago, Ill. Terronez is at times unexpectedly called to go into communities where things are hot and cool things down. Soon after accepting his position, John Terronez was in [illegible] to settle a problem that had the Mexican community in an uproar. A Mexican American student it seems was beaten and hospitalized by a school teacher. Two weeks later Terronez attended the Notre Dame Midwest Conference of Mexican Americans where he seen everywhere observing and listening. Not long ago John had to fly to [illegible] where Mexican Americans students had walked out of a local high school which coincided with blacks protest action at high school in another part of town. Public officials were uptight and request the services of the CRS. Terronez has went into other communities of the Midwest besides attending briefing sessions in Washington D.C. Terronez job is demanding one which calls for an energetic and dedicated person as we already know him to be. LA RAZA UNIDA COMES TO IOWA There will be a meeting in Muscatine, Iowa on Sunday, May 24 to organize a LA RAZA UNIDA. La Raza Unida is an outgrowth of a grassroots conference held in El Paso, Tex. a few years back and spread to the Midwest.
