Mexican Americans have been complaining in recent year about the neglect of federal and local government to deal with their social problems.

President Nixon before his election conducted a public relations compaign to corral the votes of the Spanish speaking people.

Press release were sent to Chicano activists all over the country proclaiming the priority the administration was giving to the appointment and hiring of Spanish speaking people into the federal government, 

After President Nixon's election there was suddenly an about face and the administration started swinging the  budgetary ax at a very low level.

As a consequence a number of Mexican Americans lost their jobs and appointment with the federal government, 

One crippling blow to self-help programs for Mexican Americans was the impoundment of funds and the decision to rechannel funds thru special revenue sharing to the state and local governments.

Now Mexican Americans will have to deal with city administrations whose priorities have always been capital improvements. They will have to complete for self-help programs, for example, with street improvements, a downtown mall, a new sewage disposal system, building of parking ramps, etc.

It would behoove Mexican Americans of the area to question candidates for office on this November how much support they can count on for getting their fair share of special revenue sharing funds.
