This is Ernesto Rodriguez.

The contract negotiating between the Davenport Education Association and the School Board has been the focus of public attention lately.

Many supporters of the teachers have lauded their efforts.

One supporter likened their efforts to a minority group "fighting for justice."

Another advocate of teacher's rights accused the school board of insensitivity to their (teacher's) problems.

The Mexican American Education Committee of Davenport has for some years tried to sensitize school administrators, the school board, and teachers to the unique educational needs of Mexican American and other Spanish speaking children.

Earlier this year a school administrator recommended that members of the Mexican American Education Committee prepare a barrier course to increase understanding of the unique cultural differences and educational needs of Chicanos for school teachers.

All last summer members of the Mexican American Education Committee worked diligently to put together such a course.

This barrier course was offered to all teachers in the Davenport School District.

Unfortunately so few were the teachers who felt it necessary to learn more about the cultural and social background of the Chicano students in their classes the barrier course was dropped.

My point is that if one of the primary concerns of the Davenport Education Association is that all children receive a quality education, they should get behind any effort that will better qualify teachers to be able to relate to children of different cultural backgrounds and provide them with quality education, I wonder if the DEA is concerned only fighting for just-us (themselves) or really are concerned with justice, especially in the class-room.
