VIEWPOINT I am Ernesto Rodriguez September 16 marks a holiday for the country's Mexican Americans, who for years have celebrated Mexico's Independence from Spanish rule. Chicanos over the country will join in colorful fiesta of varying degrees to celebrate the end of the 10 year revolution of Mexicans to gain their independence from the yoke of Spain in 1821. It was on September 16, 1810, that Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castillo first raised the cry of revolt which has comee to be know as "el grito de Dolores." From then on Mexico was in turmoil under freedom was achieved. It was after 1821 that the Mexican era in the Southwest actually took sail. Today there are about 9.2 million Latinos in the country. Of those, an estimated 5.3 million( a disputed Census figure considered too low) are Mexican Americans with major concentrations in the Southwest-Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Over the years, however, that migration has spanned all parts of the United States. While assimilation has taken its toll, the culture has survived as have the ties with a mother country so near by. Thus the celebration of that country's independence here. In observance of that holiday Council # 10 of LULAC in Davenport will be holding a dance, coronation of the Fiesta Queen and the awarding of a $300.00 scholarship to a deserving young person. We urge all people who value the heritage of the Mexican people to attend this gala affair Saturday, September 15 at 9:00 p.m. Eagles Danceland in Davenport. This Ernest Rodriguez for Viewpoint
