VIEWPOINT DECEMBER 14, 1973 This is Ernesto Rodriguez As Christmas approaches churches, unions and other charitable organizations turn their benevolent attention to the poor. The giving of the traditional Christmas basket has almost become an institution. Unfortunately a Christmas basket only lasts a few days then the poor are faced with another year of deprivation. There are other means of helping the poor to help themselves on a continuing basis. For instance, the farmworkers who in California and other parts of the southwest are struggling for union recognition and better conditions of employment. Let us examine the intolerable conditions in which they live and work. Farmworkers average $2,700 a year for a family of four. Eight hundred thousand children under 16 work in the fields. Eighty percent of these children never reach high school. They (suffer?) a 120% higher maternal and child mortality rate. Three hundred percent higher accident rate on the job. They suffer from a 260% higher tuberculosis and infectious diseases. Eight hundred farmworkers die from pesticide poisoning yearly. How can John W. Public, the churches, unions and other organizations help farmworkers alleviate their improverished lifestyle thru non violent means. All the farmworkers ask is that you boycott all lettuce and grapes at Christmas time and all year round until these products respect the human dignity of farmworkers and their rights to a decent wage and working conditions.
