I wish to take this time to recognize the contributions of one such group, the Chicanos. February 17 marks the beginning of National LULAC WEEK. Here in the Quad Cities two Councils of the League of United Latin Americans are observing LULAC week, Council #10 of Davenport and Council 4007 of Moline. Lulac here and throughout the nation have proved that out greatest source of energy is people. For many years they have volunteered their time in order that the principles of liberty, equality and justice are a reality to Spanish speaking people. LULAC has sponsored housing for low-income families, educational service centers, job training programs and a host of social and welfare programs to make this country a better place to live. LULAC has sponsored housing for low-income families, educational service centers, job training programs and a host of social and welfare programs to make this country a better place to live. LULAC in Davenport has always been in the forefront in defending the civil rights of Latinos as well as other minorities. Every year they have awarded a scholarship to a deserving young Chicano who wishes to further their education. Last year they received a grant to provide services to the Spanish speaking elderly in Scott and Muscatine Counties. For the many activities carried out by LULAC for the Advancement and betterment of America we salute them in their observance of their 45th anniversary. This is Ernesto Rodriguez for Viewpoint.
