area BD for migrants VIEWPOINT- by ERNEST RODRIGUEZ This is ERNEST R- In the last days of the Iowa legislature the Senate passed a bill to create a Spanish speaking Study's Commission. The commission would be composed of 9 members of the Spanish speaking community and 4 legislators. Some critics question the need of such a commission and say why not a Commission for the Italians, the Greeks, the Poles, etc. They fail to realize that Spanish speaking people in Iowa make up the sencond largest minority group in the state with Problems compounded in many instances by a language barrier. Imagine yourself applying for a driver's license in a country where the questions in the driver's test are in a language which you cannot read and write. Imagine yourself as a youngest of 8 or 9 placed in a school where every body speaks a foreign language you don't understand, and even the pictures on the wall and the teacher have no relation to your cultural background. Imagine having an accident and being placed in a hospital and not being able to tell the doctors and nurses where you hurt and not understanding their questions about how you feel. Imagine entering a tavern and being refused service for reasons unknown to you. These and many other problems confront Iowa's 20,000 Spanish speaking people During the summer months another 4,000 Mexican Migrants come into Iowa to harvest tomatoes and other crops and while they are here spend many of their hard-earned dollars to help boost our economy. The Chicano leaders legitimately request for the establishment of Commission to study and find solutions for their problems is long over due. We hope that Iowans will urge their representatives to support the passage of the bill in the house when the new session opens next January. This is E.R. for Viewpoint
