VIEWPOINT 9 JUN 77 Broadcast over WHBF on Viewpoint This is Ernesto Rodriguez. With all the furor surrounding women's rights it is refreshing to note one minority organization's efforts to assure women their rightful place in society today. I am talking about IMAGE, a national Hispanic organization whose purpose is to promote the employment of Hispanics by Government at all levels. At its national convention held in San Antonio, TX, last month IMAGE sponsored a workshop on "New Horizons for the Hispanic Woman." These are some of the concerns surfaced in the workshop. The Hispanic woman shares with all women the basic needs that cut across ethnic lines, but yet she has distinctive priorities and approaches because her world, culture and values do not always parallel those of the Anglo woman. The Hispanic woman's struggle is against sexism within the context of a racist society. She is constantly reminded that Anglo women have been part of the social oppression of Hispanics, and that they are still not sensitive on the whole to minorities or their needs. The woman's rights movement must recognize the cultural and historical differences of Hispanic women and embrace the total concept of human rights and social justice. The Hispanic woman must join the Hispanic man in the struggle for equal rights and sensitize him to her rights as a person. She must join Hispanic women's group where her concerns can be crystallized into clear-cut issues.
