RETIREMENT FROM U.S. CIVIL SERVICE LTC Martinez has been recognized for his voluntary organizational work with a variety of awards. In April 1972, the Latin American Educational Foundation of Denver, CO, gave him special recognition as the outstanding projects. On April 27, 1874 in Denver, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) at its annual convention selected him as "LULAC Man of the Year" The Colorado Springs chapter of the American GI Forum in January , 1974 also presented him a plaque for exemplary community service to the veteran and their families in El Paso County. On July, 1974 La Fiesta Bonita Committee cited Martinez for his loyalty and participation in service and involvement with all Spanish origin organizations in the Pikes Peak Region. The Youth of the Latin American Teen Club awarded him a plaque for his interest and support during 1965-1975 of their group in Colorado Springs. The Veterans Outreach Program sponsored by the Colorado Springs American GI Forum Chapter awarded LTC (Ret) and Mrs. Thomas H. Martinez in January, 1980 a plaque for outstanding and sustained services to the veterans of all services in El Paso County. In March, 1977 when Radio KAPI of Pueblo, CO, a Spanish language broadcasting station conducted its "Mexican American of the Year contest, Thomas H. Martinez was runnerup and was recognized both by Radio KAPI and the Pueblo Chapter of the American GI Forum cited him for dedicated services to the community and State of Colorado. In June, 1977, Miss Sarina Martinez, 1976-77 National Queen of the American GI Forum presented LTC (Ret) and Mrs. Thomas H. Martinez a personal plaque in sincere appreciation for outstanding dedication and constant guidance to her during her tenure as Queen in Colorado and the Nation. During 1983 Martinez has continued his volunteer work as Secretary to the Board of Directors, Latin American Educational Foundation of Colorado Springs. He works as a team Captain in the LAEF's fundraising program for scholarships, special projects and special events. He is currently vice-chairman of the American GI Forum chapter and was elected on May 22, 1983 as Deputy State Director for Colorado LULAC. During the state convention at the Four Seasons Motor Inn, he was also selected again as "LULAC Man of the Year" for his 45 year membership service and involvement in LULAC activities.
