6-6-6 Another important fact is that between 1820 and 1974, Europeans represented 77 percent of the number of immigrants legally entering the U.S. [Here in IA] / It became regular practice of immigration authorities to carry out raids in the Muscatine area among migrant workers, and in Ft. Madison and the Quad-Cities at foundries and other sweat shops were it was commonly known [in the Hispanic community] most undocumented workers were employed. The only thing about enforcement is that in many instances Mexican Americans and legally admitted aliens were caught in the process and suffered the indignities of being treated as law breakers. Around 1971 such a raid was conducted in Ft. Madison in the Mexican village and the Area Board for Migrants, an agency I happened to work for at the time, received complaints from American citizens and legally admitted aliens of immigration authorities breaking into their home late at night to question them. Often [local] over zealous /local police authorities [over extend their] go beyond their authority to question and harass people they suspect of being in the country illegally. About a year ago The Moline, IL police raided a Mexican tavern & arrested a number of people they believed to be in the country illegally. Two of them turned out to be citizens or legal aliens & sued the city of Moline and recently won a settlement 6
