Conclusion PRESENTATION ON ENDING DE FACT SEGREGATION OR RACIAL IMBALANCE IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS by Ernest Rodriguez I think it is a good thing in this time of needed changes in race attitudes for our children to gain the rich experiences which comes from association with other children of different races and cultures in our public schools. An experience they are somewhat deprived of in all white schools staffed by teachers who for the most part are products of the same isolated educational and social experience and therefore afflicted by stereotyped notions difficult to discard. I believe diversity in social experiences have a healthy effect n building future citizens in the concept of brotherhood and preservation of human dignity. Like plants and flowers children must be exposed to nutritive elements of education and unhindered by prejudices and uncontaminated by hatred in order to flower and bloom. To be freed from the perversion of racism it is imperative that they be given an opportunity to develop friendships naturally and according to their individual preference rather than according to the particular preferences of adults based on racism. If our American society is going to cleanse its soul of racism it must start with the very young of pure heart and untainted minds. It is impossible to sow seeds of brotherhood of human kind in the wasteland of prejudiced minds and callous indifference. If we are to acquire a new lease on social justice for all Americans based on constitutional principles then we are going to have to abandon longheld beliefs founded on the fallacy of supremacy and inferiority of races. This is going to require a long hard self examination of conscience and an equal determination to undergo the healing process. We must usher in a new generation of Americans who will mold a new way of life that extols the kind of America all men can believe in. I think we can accomplish integration at West High this or next year if we approach it with the same positive attitude and purpose behind the highly successful foreign student exchange program which I believe is designed to bring about better understanding between people of different cultural and racial backgrounds from different countries.
