RACE RELATIONS by Ernest Rodriguez You know we're hearing a lot of political rhetoric about law and order being the biggest domestic issue this year. Well, setting aside all personal political considerations and speaking in my role as a Human Relations Commissioner. I feel the need to speak out against these distortions of fact and reality. The number one issue today is not law and order but the race problem which has for many long years been corroding the vert foundation and structure of our nation. A nation I might remind you founded on the principle that all men are equally endowed by our creator with the inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A nation structured on our constitution, granted to every citizen of our country as guarantee of his inalienable rights. If there are those among us who insist on making law and order the outstanding issue of today then let them repudiate racism as a deviation from the law and order as prescribed in the above mentioned passage of the Declaration of Independence. Now if we are honest we will have to admit that the constitutional rights of black people of America have been abrogated time and again by legal gerrymandering and subtle discriminatory business and social practices. I think we'll agree that when the protest, it is to protest race attitudes and practices which perpetuate racism.
