-2- Racism which is the backbone of prejudice and discrimination I would like to appeal to all of you and all good people of Davenport regardless of color etc, to take concerted action to end racism in our community. Racism is our biggest hang up and it is the responsibility of all of us to end this perversion of our society in order to archieve good race relations. In as much as the white majority sits at the controls of the machinery which can bring about change in attitudes and social practices, the burden of responsibility to make this change lies with the white majority. Whites and blacks must sit down together and discuss every facet of the complex problems in race relations. I think here in Davenport we have made some important steps in improving race relations but we need to explore all avenues of civic and social action to render racism null and void in our community. I don't believe there is a more crucial issue facing America today than the problem or more correctly human rights. It is the lack of concern and reluctance to insure the basic human and civil rights of black people that is the crux of all the problems facing many communities in the form of protests, demonstrations, and sometimes disorders engaged in by black people. As long as any man feels that his dignity is trampled on and human rights violated the possibility for violence will ever be present. This is no new revelation or analysis or sober evaluation made from extensive government studies but is fact and reality proven throughout the history of mankind by many races of people.
