Education 450(G) "Race Relations & the Educator" April 11, 1972 Lecturer: Mr. Ernest Rodriguez Topic: "History and Culture of the Mexican American" Mr. Ernest Rodriguez is the present coordinator for the Area Board of Migrants in Davenport, Iowa. He has been an active participant since 1959 in various groups and organizations dealing with discrimination in general and especially the migrant problems of the Mexican American. He was an organizer and past treasurer of Council #10 of the League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC) in Davenport, and a past chairman of the Davenport Chapter of the American G.I. Forum. In 1968 he was appointed to the Davenport Human Relations Commission. In 1970 he organized the Minority Coalition in Davenport, bringing together LULAC, the NAACP, the Catholic Interracial Council, and neighborhood groups. Mr. Rodriguez has also spent much of the past two years developing La Roza Unida - a coalition of Mexican American organizations in Iowa and Illinois attempting to build pride in the Mexican heritage and unity based on strong family ties. Mr. Rodriguez will speak on the history and culture of the Mexican American from the Aztec migration of Mexico to the present day Chicano movement. Included in his lecture will be a discussion of some leaders that have emerged in the Chicano movement and some of the problems that the Mexican Americans see as being relevant to themselves in terms of change. for a two year term. He is also a member of the Iowa Advisory Committee to United States Civil Rights Commission.
