-8- HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF LA RAZA UNIDA [[underline]]PURPOSE[[end underline]]: LA RAZA UNIDA is a non-sectarian ground-swell movement of Latin-American solidarity throughout the United States comprising a loose fellowship of civic, social, cultural, religious and political groups. It was formed because of the deeply felt need among Latin-Americans to dramatize their plight as a disadvantaged minority; to assert their rights as American citizens; and to assume their rightful share of the social, economic, educational and political opportunities guaranteed by the American democratic system. [[underline]]NAME[[end underline]]: The term "La Raza" was adopted because of its familiarity among the Spanish-speaking people, and because the Spanish-speaking people usually identify themselves with the term LA RAZA. LA RAZA UNIDA means unity. Unity shall be the method by which LA RAZA UNIDA shall achieve its goals. [[underline]]STRUCTURE[[end underline]]: Initially La Raza Unida was established as an association; composed of all existing Latin-American organizations. This structure was chosen because at the moment of its creation there were many organizations that were not present at that historical hour. It was understood that La Raza unida would continue as an association until some further date at some future national convention where the membership would discuss and vote upon a permanent structure for La Raza Unida. [[underline]]FACTUAL HIGHLIGHTS[[end underline]]: The first national effort to establish La Raza Unida began at 5:00 p.m. on October 26, 1967 at the California delegation caucus in the Paso del Norte Hotel, in El Paso, Texas, where more than 1,000 Spanish surnamed delegates had assembled to participate in the Federal Government hearings on Mexican-American affairs. Within thirty-six hours history was charged, and the first national conference, known as La Raza Unida Unity Conference, was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic church gymnasium in El Paso on Saturday, October 28, 1967. Dr. Ernesto Galarza of San Jose, California, an economist and one of the most respected fighters for the Civil Rights of the Latin-American, was unanimously chosen as Chairman for La Raza Unida Unity Conference. It was appropriate that Dr. Galarza be elected Chairman. He had been most instrumental in initiating La Raza Unida Association in California. On October 6 and 7, 1967 the various Latin-American organizations met at Camp Hess Kramer near Maliby Beach. The purpose of the October 26 California caucus was to begin a national campaign to unify the Spanish-speaking peoples. Dr. Galarza stated the purpose of La Raza Unida Unity conference with these words, "We want to hold our own conference and move toward unification of our people. This is something the structure of these Hearings has denied us." Because many leaders, presidents and chairmen of existing Latin-American organizations were not present in El Paso it was decided that no official [[underline]]MANANITAS MEXICANAS[[end underline]] An all new program featuring Mexican music and informative news ad comments about Mexican activities is on the air over station KWNT every Sunday from 10;00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
