-2- the Mayor of that city on the Chamber of the Commerce to integrate their work forces. This is progress! Last Saturday night, a group was denied admission to the Palms Supper Club. Although it was not an all Negro or all local group, it was assumed by those present to be an obvious case of discrimination. Even though entry was made, there was no service and all members of the party, Negro and White… sat in booths or on stools until closing time. During this period the County attorney was contacted as was the Sheriff. As the party left, the Sheriff saw that all others vacated the premises, also. An apology was made by a member of the Rashid family, the following day,… and they also asked that the same party make reservations for later that day so the mistake might be rectified. However, the damage had been done. It is ironic that some of the visitors are from Alabama and Louisiana where discrimination does not follow subtle lines. This was quite an experience on their first visit to our state of Iowa. A report on the meeting with Attorney Tucker shall be made at the next NAACP meeting. We are advising everyone to refrain from buying at and supporting those places which are connected with this establishment. No matter how many 'selected’ persons have eaten there, a discriminatory policy is not acceptable…and we will not settle for a compromise. This is not progress! Have you registered to vote? This is your privilege, right and duty! Plans will be made at the next meeting to effectively mobilize and carry out a group registration movement. Cars will be provided for those without transportation. The power of the boat is ours … we must use it! Vice President, William Johnson, has written the Governor about the FEPC Bill, and will present it, as soon as it reaches his hands. He has also written a letter to the Union Electric Company in St. Louis about their hiring policy. The reply to this will also be made public. When you pay your bills, are you seeing the Manager and asking about the possibility of placement of Negroes in the various positions. Don’t lag behind in this effort…this is our town and our money helps to support most of the retail merchants. It would appear that the resolution which local businessmen printed in the newspaper was only to appease. They don’t seem to be aware of the fact that the ‘rising wind’ of the ‘50’s is now blowing full force and shall take its toll here, as well as elsewhere, until economic opportunity is gained for ALL members of minority groups. Public notification will be made of the next meeting. We were all encouraged by the attendance at the last meeting and hope the next one will be even better. We must work together…and work hard. The fruits of our labor will be sweet to all of us…and most of all to our children. Join the NAACP and take pride in the fact that you are involved in a fight that is really worthwhile, for all of us have a challenge to meet…and we must not fail!!!
