Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 NEWSLETTER, AUGUST 8, 1963 Have YOU written letters to your Congressmen??? Don't delay... get YOURS in the mail ... TODAY!!! During the past week, the application of a Negro was accepted at Wilkens. Since their refusal to take an application was the basis of our directing the Selective Buying Campaign towards them, we are removing them from our list until further notice! Whenever and wherever Selective Buying is introduced .. it can only be effective if it is participated in whole-heartedly! It has been reported that persons have been seen going in and out of those stores which are included in our campaign. It is true that such an effort may bring about hardships ... but this is minor in our fight for first - class citizenship. Don't YOU Think the right to earn a decent living is worth a sacrifice??? The stores still on our Selective Buying list are: Allens Woolworths Rashids (Those which are connected with the Palms) Tentative plans for an All Day Freedom Fund Picnic will be submitted to the local branch for their approval. This function would take place on Saturday, the 24th of August. It is important that as many members as possible be present so that different opinions might be voiced. We have a Freedom Fund quota to reach and a project such as the one which has been suggested ... could help us attain our goal. Freedom is not free... and money is needed to enable the NAACP to continue its work! MEETING FORT MADISON BRANCH NAACP 7:30 PM AUGUST 11, 1963 DON'T forget !!! YOU are needed! Write YOUR letter to the Congressmen, TODAY !!! University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives.
