Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER, SEPTEMBER 27. 1963 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 The youth members of the Fort Madison branch of the NAACP are to be commended for the wonderful they did when they decorated the cars which were used in the Rodeo Parade. The signs which were used on the cars were well made and certainly took much time and effort ..., all of which was greatly appreciated by all branch members. This, again, stands as proof that cooperative efforts are fruitful! It has been called to our attention that we neglected to mention the names of many who worked quite hard and faithfully to ensure the success of the Freedom Fund Picnic! May we apologize? Listing names can create a problem, at times.. However, we wish to give special thanks to the following workers, also ! Misses Wendola, Treva and Linda Carter, Cynthia and Karen Murray, Vernon Windsor, Mr Lathan lewis, Mrs. Betty Edwards, Mr. Eldon Malcom, Mr. And Mrs. Leonard White, Mr. Henry Hanna, and Mr. Jack Maupin! Members of the Labor and Industry Committee, as well as those who had voiced complaints, met with the personnel of the Iowa State Employment Agency. Both sides stated their opinions and we feel that we are now getting the cooperation we should have had before. Perhaps the difficulty came about because of a misunderstanding on the part of all concerned. However, it must be understood that we are resolute in our effort to obtain equality of opportunity to be placed in those jobs which are available. Notification has been received from the Iowa State Employment Agency that the following jobs are available for males: (2) temporary construction jobs, (2) jobs at Anchor Metal, and (2) Pit driver jobs at the quarry in West Point. Inquiries should be made at the Employment Agency Ft, Madison's school system has employed its first Negro teacher. Mr. A. W. Jones is teaching mathematics at the Fort Madison Public High School. The members of the Fort Madison branch of the NAACP wish to take this opportunity to welcome him to our community. Have you been participating in the SELECTIVE BUYING campaign... ??? Don't forget... a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Regardless of your choice in this matter, we are ALL inextricably involved. The choice must be YOURS... but the fight will always be OURS! Here is the list: Allens Woolworths Fuller Brush Company The Palms Rashid Rexall Drugs Smartway Dept.
