-2- in the eyes of the world! 'Whatsoever disunites man from God- disunites man from man. - Burke The NAACP supports the objectives of James Meredith's March! Following is a statement which was issues by Roy Wilkins, Executive Director of the NAACP, on June 10th as set forth by James Meredith. "The single overriding issue is the shooting of James Meredith is that nothing in existing law or practice can protect a man anywhere in the Deep South from a race-inspired act of violence, or deter a would-be attacker by the assurance of punishment. All the outrage, all the indignation, all the boiling anger we can summon will be on no value unless they produce action to correct this defect in the law. Accordingly, we gave support to the march initiated by Mr. Meredith on June 5th and we were represented by officers of our Memphis Branch on the first leg of that march, tragically interrupted by the shooting of Mr. Meredith. We realize that recent gains in civil rights have been made possible by the support of the overwhelming majority of American citizens of all races and faiths. We welcome and expect their continued support. The NAACP os convinced that bills now bending in Congress will provide Federal Protection in cases like the Meredith assault, will end jury discrimination and will see to it that government makes adequate financial compensation ot victims of racial assault or to their families. The marchers from Memphis to Jackson, and the citizens across the country who will be rallying this Sunday, June 12, for the third anniversary of the assassination of Wedgar Evers, will do most for James Meredith and for Negroes everywhere if their protest is a call for promt action by the congressman the civil rights bill. The NAACP re-dedicates itself to the speedy achievement of a national policy which effectively guarantees the safe exercise of every man's constitutional rights. We continue to support the goals of the march as outlines by Mr. Meredith, goals which the NAACP has always espoused: increasing the Negro vote and lifting the pall of fear that hangs over southern Negroes, that is, protecting them against racial violence. Also the elimination of corrosive racism. ' I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.' - Goethe ALL Branches are urged to take the following action! 1) Send telegrams and letters to Congressman urging passage of Civil Rights Bill #HR 14765, which provides measures for protection of civil rights workers, University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
