Fort Madison, Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER IKE SMALLS TROPHY WINNER of '64 MAY 13, 1965 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 The annual Region IV Leadership Training Conference was held in St. Paul, Minnesota April 30th through May 2nd. Participation was very good with the attendance the largest in the history of this Region. 229 delegates were reported as being present by the Credentials committee. Those taking part in the workshops stated that they were some of the most informative and interesting sessions they had ever attended. The wall integrated delegation visibly portrayed the fact that the NAACP is an organization composed of persons of all races and walks of life who are interested in the dignity and rights of all men regardless of their race, color, creed or national origin. Mr. Leonard H. Carter, Regional Director of Region IV, is being appointed to the San Fransisco Office by the National Association and will be leaving Kansas City after the 1st of July. The members of the Fort Madison, Branch, extended their best wishes to Mr. Carter and his family as they leave the midwest to make their home in California. We also hope he will be as successful in his work in the new region as has been in Region IV. We will also miss the Administrative Secretary of the Regional Offices, Miss Billy Jo Williams, who will also be leaving in the near future. Perhaps the greatest expression of appreciation to be made, to these two, would be the continued growth of the Region and its member branches...for there is much work left to be done and all of the assistance and guidance which has come from the Regional Offices leaves us in a good position to carry on! As promised, in the last newsletter...here is a list of the standing committees of the local branch and their respective chairmen. Also, because of the many inquiries made regarding the functions of the various committees, this information will be printed, as outlined in the Constitution and By-Laws for Branches of the National Association For The Advancement of Color People. (ARTICLE IV - Section 5) CHURCH WORK COMMITTEE Reverend Phillip Ryan - Chairman 372 - 3179 (a) "CHURCH WORK. The Church Work Committee shall include ministerial and lay religious leaders who are members of the Branch. It shall : (1) promote an educational program designed to give a moral and ethical interpretation to the civil rights struggle; (2) interpret the work of the Association to organized religious groups for all faiths; (3) enlist the support of such organized religious groups for membership, fund raising and the struggle for equality and full civil rights; and (4) provide resource assistance for religious education and social action activities associated with the improvement of race relations. COMMUNITY COORDINATION COMMITTEE Mr. Jesse T. Brooks - Chairman 372 - 2173 (b) "COMMUNITY COORDINATION. The Committee on Community Coordination shall enlist the support of other community organizations on issues affecting the interests of minority groups. University of Iowa Libraries.
