-5- DON'T DELAY...WRITE TO YOUR CONGRESSMEN, TODAY! "It is the time that our country, the most powerful nation on earth, should become aware of the legitimate uses of power, black and white. In our land the citizen is the power, and every citizen should have his share. There can be no justice unless three exists the power to see that the demands of justice are enforced. The poor and dis-possessed of our country will never secure justice for themselves until they are given the opportunity to achieve legitimate power, through education through economic self-sufficiency and through the opportunity to present their just demands in an organized manner." -Cardinal Cushing HOW WOULD OUR COMMUNITY RATE IF WE WERE TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS? 1. Are there any ghettos? 2. What is the minority group population and how is it represented in all areas of policy making throughout the community? 3. Do the unions in this area accept minority group members in apprenticeship programs? 4. How much housing is available to members of minority groups regardless of race, color or creed? 5. How much NEW housing is available to families regardless of race, color or creed? 6. Does defacto segregation exist in education, recreation, churches and other areas of community life? 7. Do persons from minority groups receive equal pay for equal work and advancement commensurate with their ability and education? 8. How many residents of our community are willing to accept all people, for themselves, regardless of race, creed or country of national origin? 9. Can you think of any community problems which are specifically traceable to divisions on the basis of race, creed or country of national origin? The above questions,....if carefully considered,...are food for thought! "To admit that there are three persons in God and that Mary is a virgin mother causes the Catholic no inconvenience. But, when the pastor says to his people, 'You must love colored folks, you must treat Latin Americans as equals...and, worst of all, you must not pay starvation wages to defenseless men and women,' too many Catholics declare that the pastor is taking things too far." -Archbishop Robert E. Lucy Southern Ba ptists refused to participate in a revival crusade in South Africa because Negro preachers could not enter the country with the whites. The Home Mission Board canceled the tour after planning to recruit 100 evangelists including about 20 Negroes. "We marvel at the silence that divides the living and the dead Yet more apart Are they who all life long live side by side Yet never heart by heart! University of Iowa Libraries.
