-3- WORDS LIKE FREEDOM "There are words like Freedom Sweet and wonderful to say, On my heartstrings freedom sings All day...everyday There are words like Liberty That almost make me cry. If you had known what I know You would know why - Langston Hughes " Attorney General Mitchell has now become the first in our History to openly advocate that Americans disobey laws they do not like. The Attorney General counseled Southerners last week to disregard court orders on the ground that there is a right "to reject unreasonable requirements of busing and to send their children to the neighborhood schools" - Mankiewicz and Braden - N.Y Post There may be something done about the three students who were killed at Kent State University in Ohio, but it calls to mind the killing of three students at South Carolina University in Orangeburg, by State Troopers. This incident involved Black students and State Troopers, while the other involved whites and the National Guard. Civil suits initiated by the parents of these students, are still pending. "It is not a trivial matter that the Vice President of the United States of America uses the power and prestige and now the impunity of his position to dare interfere with the rights and freedoms of academic institutions. It is not enough to say that this is his freedom of speech because in his case it is a speech of a reactionary type backed by the power of the presidency. I repeat, backed by the power of the presidency, because Mr. Agnew and Mrs. Mitchell could not be as consistent in their regressive and reactionary comments without this being condoned, if not encouraged and attimulated by the President of the United States. " - Dr Kenneth Clark, president of the Metropolitan Applied Research center and professor of Psychology at the City College of New York's City University The Region IV Leadership Training Conference which was held in Rochester, Minnesota was full of some of the most informative and constructive workshops we've ever attended. The Branch in Rochester deserves a lot of credit because they did a tremendous job. Also, we have never been anywhere. where everyone was extremely gracious, all of the time. Even the waitresses and the bus boys kept their "cool" under the stress and strain of trying to serve tables in an over crowded Banquet room. Many of you have received letters about the expiration of your membership. Some of you have answered. some have not. Please remember, that we all have a job to do... and that hob is not without cost. We need you...actively and financially !! Join the NAACP!!! University of Iowa Libraries. Iowa Women's Archives
