For more information regarding time and place, you can call: Mrs. Oneda Murray 372-3501 or Miss Virginia Harper 372-3542 The news commentators and the white press, generally, are becoming more and more disgusting in their reports of the 'Powell' case. It would seem inconceivable that they could not see 'why' and 'what' ... the Negro support of Powell is ... were it not for the fact that they are persisting in their old habit of substantiating the 'white power' structure's consistent denial that the Negro has the ability to speak for himself. Even after having been proven wrong ... many times, ... they cling with a frantic tenacity to the position that they, ... without consideration for the Negro viewpoint understand clearly how the Negro feels. We have not read, anywhere ..., nor have we heard in any of their comments, ... where the Civil Rights leaders (as recognized by those who work in the area of civil rights) condone the actions of Adam Clayton Powell. Rather, ...these people have continued to condemn the actions of the members of the House of Representatives. All explanations lead directly to the fact that the members of that legislative body acted the way they did because of Powell's race. Contrary to the opinion of the fore-mentioned sculptors of public thought ..., the various organizations have not dropped everything in an effort to band together in 'black' support of Powell. They are shouting against an injustice whose dividend to its perpetrators could well be one that might backfire. Civil rights workers refuse to be divided simply because the white press and the news commentators tell the world they are! James Meredith was picked by the hands of white Republican politicians ... not because they have such a high regard for him, but, because they thought he would serve their purpose. Negro Republicans in Harlem have pointed out that they will be responsible for the selection of the Negro who is chosen to 'run' against Powell and, perhaps, represent them. They say, as have many before them..., that this is something the ‘white power’ structure is ill equipped to do,… and, we must agree! It is time for recognition of and adjustment to the fact that the situation which used to exist of disregard for the Negro idea on matters which concern him…, is well in the past and will remain there! That Meredith has been courageous, cannot be denied. However, it also cannot be denied that he was chosen as a likely candidate to oppose Powell because of his prominent activity in the civil rights arena. The fact that the efforts of the white politicians to ‘pit’ one Negro against another, has failed, must be given sound applause! None of the news reports or commentaries can change the fact that we protest the action of the House of Representatives unless it is extended to all of its membership. Nor will they divide the civil righters as to their ultimate goals. In the words of James Meredith, “White America does not understand the ironies and the issues involved.” – University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women’s Archives
