tesseract 11 glories a thousand times greater! For the misty shapes, having as their base myriad galaxies, of which I had had a brief glimpse, were moving; slowly, it is true, but moving. And these moving shapes, these stupendous forms, all were vaguely [[underline]]human in shape[[end underline]]! the end THE ARCTURUS CRYSTALS by K. T. Anthony (Editor's note: With the author's permission we are only printing the beginning of this tale. We would like to have you write out the rest of the story and send it in. The best ones will be published in future issues of TESSERACT. Your story need not necessarily be like the author's, in fact we imagine each story submitted will be entirely different from others.) Blue Arcturus gleamed invitingly thru the left observation port of the space liner [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]]. The ship throbbed to the vibrations of the driving chambers as it plowed steadily onward in pursuit of the 23rd century space outlaw, Sig Jacks. Sig Jacks' ship, the [[underline]]Scarlet Jewel[[end underline]], could not hope to outstep the [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]], newest creation of the Pagen Space Ship Co. Dead ahead of the [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline][ a red pin point glimmered....intermitently. Ken Link flipped the switch of the impatiently buzzing visoscope. The screen became translucent and the face of the observer at station three appeared. "The [[underline]]Scarlet Jewel[[end underline]] lies dead forward, sir," the observer said. "Two degrees above our own plane of flight." Lieutenant Link relayed the information to Captain Cellen seated at the chart desk across the room. "Signal to the Chief Engineer to increase our velocity ten miles per second and have the Pilot incline our flight two-thirds of a degree upward," the Captain ordered quickly. "If Sig Jacks thinks he can get away with as raw a performance as that common hi-jacking of the Lyran[?] ship he's due for a surprise." "I imagine walking off with such a prize as seven offers of Arcturus Crystals went to his head and he forgot his usual caution," the young Lieutenant said as he turned to enter the Navigation Room. Hours sped by as the few thousand miles between the two space ships were being rapidly eaten up by the pursuing streak of silvery metal that was the [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]]. The [[underline]]Scarlet Jewel[[end underline]] was only two hundred thousand miles from the outermost planet of Arcturus when the [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]] came within fighting distance. Lean-faced Sig Jacks peered into his visoscope and the glowering visage of Captain Cellen. "Surrender at once, Jacks" bellowed Cellen, "or we open fire." The robber's answer was a click in the transitone receiver as he cut off the set. He depressed a series of signal keys. Down in the [[underline]]Scarlet Jewel's[[end underline]] hold gunnery officers sprang to their tasks. From the rear of the ship came two projectiles -- aimed directly at the [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]]. The first projectile exploded prematurely -- its titanic reverberations not even rocking the monstrous [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]]. The second missle was better timed. It mushroomed violently into the ships hull and bashed in the outer shell near the nose. "Seal the airtight bulkheads in Sections two and four," shouted Captain Cellen."Gunner, keep up a barrage of explosives until we can get the new sonic-disintegratior in action." "Sonic-disintegrator?" is that the new weapon I've been hearing about?" questioned Ken Link. "Yes," replied Cellen. "We were issued it just before we left on this voyage. It is a form of sound reflector, the principal unit being a generator capable of emiting sound waves of any frequency. As you know, every object is capable of giving off a sound wave of a certain frequency. The frequency depends upon the size of the object and the material of which it is made. Now, if you can reflect upon that object sound waves of the exact frequency which it gives off the super-sonic vibrations will shatter the object into a million parts." "I see," mused Ken. "Then our generator emits sound waves up and down the scale until it hits the right frequency and then the [[underline]]Scarlet Jewel[[end underline]] disintegrates?" "Exactly." Projectiles burst in a fiery rain about the [[underline]]Scarlet Jewel[[end underline]] but as yet they had done no serious damage. Sig Jacks' gunners were pouring back a stream of explosive torpedos that were making huge dents in the hull of the [[underline]]Vegan[[end underline]].
