FAN number 4 september 1945 Since the later part of 1939 when I first got my interest up in the affairs of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society I wanted to see a big banquet held here in Los Angeles for fans and Pros alike. That dream was culminated on February 10, 1945 when the SCIENCE FICTION FANQUET was held at 2200 West Seventh street across from Westlake Park near downtown Los Angeles. I spent some time prior to this date enquiring as to how much a fan would be willing to pay for his dinner at such an affair & I was surprised when I learned that they would prefer a good & expensive dinner to a less expensive affair so . . . The dinners were $2.50 per plate. There was a turnout of 36 persons that evening including A. E. Van Vogt & wife, Ross Rocklynne, Guy Gifford and Mr Reed & his wife of Reed Lithograph co. Who is an aradent EESmith fan. Prior to the Banquet I approached several of the members & asked them if theywould assist me in getting together a booklet that would introduce an outsider to the field which you and I are so familiar with. Co-operation was instantaneous. I'd thought that it would be nice to have the booklet set up in to chapters that would give a listing and analysis of the various types of our fiction and it's artwork. The result was very interesting and in this, the fourth issue of "FAN" we give you that booklet in its entirety. I figured it would fill a nice spot in your collection and also would be a nice little item to have on hand when you want to recall a good story to mind to introduce a visitor to Science, Weird and Fantasy Fiction. My thanks are cordially extended to Ackerman, Laney, Sam Russell and Alva Rogers for their articles and alsoto Andy Anderson for his help in Mimeoing and to Elmer Perdue for his Press work on the front and back covers of the booklet. Wally and Jim-E Daugherty
