SCIENCE FICTION FAN MAGAZINES --- By Weaver Wright The amateur s.f. magazines feature fiction by fans, original drawings, book reviews, news, articles about authors and artists, criticisms of professional work -- and, the perennially popular "readers' department". for news of what's doing in both the professional and fan worlds, one should get the Fanewscard Weekly. This is a postcard condensation of the news, 2c a copy or 13 for 25c from Walter Kunkelberger, 1443 - ave S, Fargo, N. Dak. If you're really interested, augment it with Fantasy Fiction Field, the weekly newssheet, 5c a copy or 6/25c from Julius Unger, 6401 - 24 Ave, Brooklyn, NY. A kind of "rich man's Fantastic Adventures magazine" is a Chanticleer, full of crazy, delightful, Alice-in-Wonderlandish humor, with a heavy accent on reviews of science fiction and fantasy books. Put out by Walter Liebscher, 25 Poplar, Battle Creek, Mich., at 15c a copy. Cygni is a new all-around magazine, issued bi-monthly by Benson Perry of 68 Madbury Rd., Durham, New Hamp. Costs 10c, 3/25c. Tops in fan humor is Le Zombie, the product of Bob Tucker, POB 260, Bloomington, Ill. 10c a copy, quarterly. The scientificorn grows tall in this one. Diablerie, the brainstorm of Bill Watson of San Francisoco, is a "poor fan's Esquire", rich in sophistication, with articles by proessional authors, outstanding artwork by the editor. Mimoegraphed in various colors, with lithographed covers. Only 5c a copy. 1299 California St. Centauri is one of the bigger and better all-around fanmags, appearing sporadically from Pismo Beach, Cal. (515 Ocean Ave.) It's 15c a copy. One of the newest fanmags is L'Inconnu, a sample copy of which may be obtained by writing Steve Robers, 581 Hughes, Memphis, Tenn. Venus is the sometimes pretentious publication of a lady editor, Lora Crozetti of 1543 W[?]ll, L.A. As she has informed us that she expects to be present at the Fanquet, you can probably get particulars from her in person. Ad Infinitum is a new effort, 10c quarterly or 30c a year, from Al Weinsteitn, 568 Audubon Ave., NYC 33. Shangfri-L'Affaires, the club organ of the LOS ANGELES SCIENCE FANTASY SOC'Y, is free from the editor, Chas. Burbee, 1057 S Normandie City. Besides local news, it features articles and fiction about fandom. In the past 15 years, around 5000 issues of hundreds of different titles have appeared. Some of the outstanding science fiction fanmags of the past have been: The Time Traveller (the first) . . . Science Fiction Digest. . .Fantasy Magazine. . .Stardust. . .Pluto. . .Spaceways. . .Science Fiction Oritac. . .ScientiSnaps. . .Shangri-LA. . .Unique. . .Imagination!. . .Science Fiction Fan. . .Tomorrow. . .Science Fiction News-Letter. . .Novae Terrae. . .Scientifiction. . .Fantasite. . .Fantasy Digest. . .Fantascience Digest. . .Goldent Atom. . .Fanare. . .Zenith. . .Ad Astra. . .Specula. . .Spectra. . .Leprechaun. . .The Comet. . .Fantasia. . .and Dawn. Most of these magazines are--like this booklet--reproduced by mimeograph. Some are colorfully hectographed, a few printed. England, Australia and Canada have contributed their share. All are the expressions of unusual ideas and pictures by persons intensely interested in imaginative topics. A number of professional people have got their starts, writing for, drawing for, or editing one of these amateur periodicals. Try some--you'll find 'em fun!
