Greatime had at "Hard Times" Party Reported by My Man Godferry Shangri-LA, 30 May 40 A memorable party was thrown at the home of Bruce Yerke on Memorial Day. Drest in Depression clothes, Walt Daugherty, Morojo, Bill Crawford, Ray Bradbury, Russ Hodgkins, Pogo, 4e, Beverly Browne, Virginia Laney & a half dozen others disported themselves from 8 till midnyt. Walt Daughterty, LOP (Life of the party), did hilarious imitations of Hitler, Groucho Marx & Walt Daugherty; Laney, Clifford Conklin (cinemactor's son), Bev Brown & Walt put on dancing exhibitions; twas a tie on a game of charades (which included drawing - & identifying - rockets, rayguns & robots) tween Pogo's & Bradbury's team; at a title guessing contest, with gestures, Hodgkins faild to recognize the name of his own mag as described by 4e's licking an imaginary sucker and smiling, then peering as the in the dark & snapping on a switch to see (Sweetness & Lite). 6 prizes were awarded Bradbury, Pogo, Hodgkins & Daugherty for game-winning or best get-ups, included being the new "Blind Spot" & an original Morey skedded for Sept Super Science. 4e read an airmailletter from the Heinleins, who are now in New York. Punch & pop & rootbeer, cookies & ice-cream were served & half a dozen flash-hotos taken.... AD RATES FOR DAWN The first thing needed to put out any magazine is, of course, money. Subscription money alone is not enough, so advertisements are needed. The cheapest ads are 15 cents, for which you get your name with best wishes in Dawn. So if you can't afford larger ads, give 40 cents, get a copy of Dawn with your name in it! Large ad rates are: 1/8 page @ .55 2 colour fancy 1/4 page @ 1.00 1/2 page @ 1.85 $2.50 1 page @ 3.25 4.00 $5.00 2 page @ 5.75 7.00 10.00 Material needed for Dawn Have you some really good transcript lying around that you've been saving for some good magazine? If so, why not send it along to DAWN? Yes, me need lots of material yet, don't forget we have over 65 big pages to fill! We have plenty of fiction, so please don't send us any, unless for the COMET. We do need : a good long article, embracing some phase of stf. We need a few short, but good articles, on anything that pertains to weird, science, or fantasy fiction. We need poetry or verse of any kind. Cartoon, sciences articles, in fact anything you think is really good, send it along, we will give it very careful consideration, and if rejected, mail it back to you promptly free. BUT MOST IMPORTANT we want each and every fan that reads this to send in his or her photo (small snapshot), with your autograph, and a very short autobiography, telling what you like, your size, etc. THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!! * * * * * * * * * * * HUGE MERIT AWARD!! READERS! We are publishing a story without the author's name! A story by a famous fan, and the first on to guess his or her name correctly will win a copy of 'Nightmare by Daylight', one of the famous British Not At Night books... AUTHORS!
