7 #2 (Madle) Sept. 3 Greetings, fellow fans: An Army Private's first few weeks are extremely busy as you all know-- consequently the delay in keeping this chain letter going the rounds. This is my fifth week now, and the worst is over. They're now training me to drive a G.I. truck; qualifications: I've been driving an automobile five months. Obviously, I'd be far more suited for clerical work-- but why talk about it? As to science fiction, I've lost practically all contact with the exception of my fellow fan and bosom companion, Rusty Barron. Rusty as you may know, is now President of the PSFS, but will have to resign in a short while as he is leaving for California on the 15th and will enlist in the Marine Corps from there. ((Editor's note: Rusty did. -BT)) Milton Rothman recently joined up with the Army and is stationed at Aberdeen, Maryland. It's very obvious that the PSFS is definitely in a bad way. Within the past few months Uncle Sam has struck at us with vengeance. First- Thomas Whiteside, then in rapid order, A. M. Phillips, Sebastian Mineo, myself, Rothman, and now Barron. It is interesting to note that four of the five presidents (past and present) are in the armed forces. The only ex-PSFS prexy left at home is Train. Incidentally, if anyone reading this knows the address of Sam Moskowitz, I would appreciate learning it. The last time I saw Sam (in January) he made the following statement: "Every time I see a soldier with glasses on, I shudder involuntarily." Another thing: I really believe that this fan magazine service for fans in the services is a grand idea. I'll be looking forward to renewing my fan mag reading. I've only seen two amateur pubs since I've been here: LeZ and Nebula. Some of the fellows are waiting for me - so carry on fans and make a name for yourself in the army as you did in the fan field. Sincerely, Bob Madle #3 (Moz Hiyah fans and generals, Sept 18 I can probably give the same excuse as Robert Madle for not sending this chain letter to the next fan quicker. After being inducted I was sent to an Army Air Corp Basic Training Center. Having no interest whatever in mechanics I was put in the Technical Training Command, to be a 'grease monkey' or something. I wanted to be in a military band but finally compromised by becoming a bugler. Now I have lots and lots of friends. The only contact I've had with science fiction since I've been inducted is LeZ and a few pro mags. (( Note: these letters are unsolicited testimonials, so help us! We really had no idea...... -BT )) I think this chain letter is a grand idea and should be very successful. I'll close and get this letter moving as fast as possible. Army life is swell and will make 'Tarzan's' or "Grey Lensmen' out of us fans (I hope!). Sincerly, Carl Motz (overpage, to #4)
