"Maria...are you ready to go yet?" The three daughters and the cousin were huddled on the front porch giggling to one another. Maria wondered what the joke could be as she slipped on her shoes. "No, Maria, do not put on those old shoes. There, by the chair, try those on. Those are for you. We got together and got a little something. Do they fit? What is the matter? Do you not like them? Maria, do not cry." To Maria, they were the most beautiful pair of shoes she ever owned. Although the shoes eventually wore out, their memory and the spirit in which they were given never did. Her favorite aunt, Valen, taught her many skills in sewing, cooking, and in the making of dolls, Whatever she learned, she retained, and would keep Valen's memory forever alive in her craft creations in her later years. Although the weeks to follow were happy ones for Maria and Otilio, the weeks turned into months and the absence of their parents became a greater burden for them to bear. The return of Zeferino and Jesusa was always in their thoughts and prayers. 14.
